Alternative = transformative? Investigating drivers of transformation in alternative food networks in Germany

In the hope for more sustainable agriculture and a stronger connection to their food, an increasing number of consumers participate in alternative food networks (AFNs) characterised by short supply chains. However, it cannot be assumed that AFNs inherently transform prevailing system its respective practices around food. Thus, we apply social innovation perspective enable comprehensive analysis changed values, relations AFNs. This article presents whether drivers transformation occur three different AFN models (Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), co-operatives (food co-ops) self-harvest gardens) how participants describe perceive them each model. Therefore, conducted interviews with producers consumers, before applying qualitative content analysis. Interviewees broad variety transformed relations: Especially CSA co-ops bear transformative potential as members report strong reconnection expressed through interaction community-building. Self-harvest gardeners predominantly seek individual capacity building have access own garden. We conclude participation fosters incremental towards value system, which can part bigger movement aimed at transformation.
